Full list of Europe’s wettest cities named and the worst isn’t in the UK | Travel News | Travel

Clear skies and warm weather are often essential when planning a European city break, but they’re hard to guarantee outside of the peak summer months.

From September onwards, rain forecasts are something to consider before travelling across the continent, with some countries faring better than others in terms of weather.

However, those willing to embrace a more atmospheric side to travel may find Europe’s rainiest locations to be desirable autumn destinations, and some of them are incredibly close to home.

The team at holidu researched the rainiest cities in Europe by looking at the average number of rainy days per month and average daily rainfall statistics. The data revealed that the rainiest city on the continent has an average of 13 rainy days per month, but it’s not in the UK.

Four British cities feature in the list of top rainspots, although it was a metropolitan destination in the Fjords that came out on top.

1. Bergen, Norway

Europe’s rainiest cities may not guarantee sunshine, but they do offer a charming charm, and Bergen does just that. Officially the rainiest city in Europe, with 13 rainy days per month and an average of 9 mm of rain per day, tourists will want to pack a raincoat if they’re on holiday in Bergen – and a good one at that.

The famous Norwegian saying, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing,” couldn’t be more apt in this city, although thankfully Bergen is well-equipped for wet weather. There’s no shortage of restaurants and cafes offering shelter and great food, plus there are plenty of museums and galleries to explore.

For those willing to brave the rain in the hope of some bright sunshine, Bergen is full of lush nature that only gets better with the rain. So when you visit, bring everything from a swimsuit to your warmest fleece, because the weather in Norway is unpredictable.

2. Sunderland, England

Sunderland was the wettest city in the UK, with 11 rainy days a month on average. The north-eastern city is close to some of England’s most beautiful beaches, however, so those who brave the weather may find an empty beach as their reward – perhaps even with a bit of sunshine.

Like most places in England, the weather is particularly bad in the winter months of December and January, when there are an average of 15 rainy days per month. According to World Weather Online, the fewest rainy days occur in April (seven per month), but museums and, of course, cafes and restaurants are open all year round for shelter.

3. Glasgow, Scotland

Glasgow was the wettest city in Scotland and the third wettest city in Europe. This Scottish destination has a maritime climate to thank for its weather due to its northern location and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.

Most of the rain falls in January and December (14 rainy days per month on average), with the least in April (eight rainy days). On average, Glasgow has 11 rainy days per month, so tourists may want to research the city’s museums and attractions – particularly the whisky distillery – before visiting.

Elsewhere on the list are Germany, Italy and even Spain, with Romania and France also home to some of the continent’s top 10 rainiest cities.
