Premier League star wants emotional Celtic testimonial showdown to celebrate career

Celtic fans have seen some brilliant testimonial matches over the years as supporters come together to celebrate a chosen player’s achievements during their career.

At the start of last season, James Forrest was the centre of attention as the Bhoys took on Athletic Club in east Glasgow, raising funds for Kilbryde Hospice and the Celtic FC Foundation.

Charity is at the heart of this special football club and Celtic always make an effort to raise money for worthy causes. Just last weekend, a team of Legends travelled to face Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Winning on penalties in front of an estimated visiting crowd of around 3,000, the club helped to organise a performance that will benefit both their own foundation and the Manchester United Foundation, as both aim to carry out community work and alleviate poverty in their respective areas and beyond.

In a long tradition of organising charity events that looks set to continue, the Sheffield Wednesday captain signalled his intention to face Celtic in his own testimonial.

Barry Bannan would like a statement from Celtic

Former Scotland international Barry Bannan is a well-known figure among Celtic fans and a lifelong supporter of the club, something he makes no secret of in public.

The Sheffield Wednesday captain has revealed he would like to face his boyhood heroes when his testimonial is due. He has been at Hillsborough since 2015.

Speaking to The Sheffield Star, the 34-year-old suggested Aston Villa would be an ideal opponent due to his time spent there, should Celtic be unable to participate.

He explained when asked: “I think everyone knows! (who he would like to face). If not them, then maybe I would choose one of my old teams, like Aston Villa or something, but I’m not bothered, to be honest. As long as all my local fans are here and my family, if you get a good turnout and your family is here, then it would be great.”

Celtic fans would welcome Bannan’s testimony

In many ways, it feels like Bannan should have played for Celtic during his career, but that didn’t happen, and he still went on to have a brilliant career at the highest level.

Despite spending two years in the youth system between 2002 and 2004, the Scot made a name for himself in England. That hasn’t stopped him labelling his inability to play for the Bhoys as a regret he will live with for the rest of his life.

Bannan said: “I will never look back with any regrets, but perhaps the only regret is that I never got the chance to play for Celtic, and that will always hurt me until the day I die.”

Celtic fans would welcome a statement involving Bannan if it were to emerge. Who knows? Maybe he could still turn up in the famous green and white!
