Bloodlands star Lola Petticrew has teamed up with Gillian Anderson for a new Channel 4 drama.

The duo will star Invasionsset in 1975 in a town outside Belfast, when a Catholic school teacher named Cushla (Petticrew) falls in love with a married Protestant man named Michael (Weekend(Tom Cullen).

“In a place where loose lips cost lives and danger lurks in the shadows, amid fear and paranoia, this illicit affair between Cushla and Michael festers and burns brightly…”, adds the synopsis.

Anderson was cast as Cushla’s mother Gina, described as “a ‘glorious wreck’ who is constantly at odds with her daughter.”

Invasions is based on the book by Louise Kennedy and was written by Evil sisters‘ Ailbhe Keogan.

“I’m genuinely excited for the world to meet Cushla and Michael on screen,” said Keogan. “The entire writing process was remarkably smooth, as the team was guided by their love for Louise’s stunning novel. It remained our creative guiding star throughout.

“We feel incredibly grateful to have been given the chance to bring the world within it to life, especially the unforgettable characters that populate Cushla and Michael’s Belfast. This show will be political, cinematic, sensual, moving and, despite the heartbreak, ultimately hopeful.”

Anderson, who is also on board as an executive producer, added: “I fell in love with Louise’s stunning book when I read it in the proof. I was immediately drawn to the tragicomic creation that is Gina and couldn’t resist when Louise asked me to play her.

“Reading Ailbhe’s brilliant scripts confirmed how vividly this story could be translated to the screen and with Dawn at the helm and Lola and Tom alongside, I’m delighted to be part of the Invasions family.”

Invasions will air on Channel 4.
