Liverpool lead race to sign £25m player who is ‘close’ to being as good as Man City’s Phil Foden

Liverpool lead race to sign £25m player who is ‘close’ to being as good as Man City’s Phil Foden

Liverpool are set to step up their transfer business in the weeks leading up to the start of the Premier League season.

The Reds are yet to make any new additions to their squad since Arne Slot took over from Jurgen Klopp.

With Slot keen to take a look at Liverpool’s squad before delving into the transfer market, a patient approach has been adopted at Anfield so far.

But there are still one or two areas where Liverpool look a little weak. Business is still there to be done.

One place where there is potential for improvement is in the forward areas, and the Reds may finally be ready to make some progress there.

Liverpool lead the way for Baris Alper Yilmaz

In terms of numbers, Liverpool are not badly stocked up front. However, Mohamed Salah is likely to leave next year and they need to start planning for that.

As a result, the Reds have been linked with a plethora of different types of options.

One who appears to be possibly top of the list so far is Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon. The latest reports suggest that Liverpool could return for Gordon towards the end of the transfer window.

The 23-year-old would be an incredibly expensive addition, however. With Liverpool’s owners always wary of overspending, there are plenty of other options beyond Gordon.

Having fared well for Turkey at Euro 2024, Galatasaray winger Baris Alper Yilmaz could be one of them. Liverpool were eyeing Yilmaz at the Euros and certainly liked what they saw.

According to German journalist Christian Falk, several Bundesliga sides have also been impressed by the 24-year-old. But reporting for The Daily Briefing, Falk suggested Liverpool are in the lead.

“Dortmund have Baris Alper Yilmaz on their list – that’s true,” says the reporter. “It’s not concrete at the moment. The rumours about Frankfurt and Leipzig are not as concrete as is the case at Dortmund.

“If Dortmund need a new striker, if they sell Fullkrug, that would be an option, but I don’t think Liverpool need to be afraid of German teams!”

Liverpool ready to push for signings

Judging by Slot’s comments during yesterday’s pre-Real Betis press conference, Liverpool are still likely to make one or two signings this summer.

The head coach said it would be a “surprise” if the Reds didn’t bring anyone in. That kind of talk makes it sound like there are one or two irons in the fire.

It seems possible that Yilmaz could be one of them. The Turk was excellent at the Euros, as his nation reached the quarter-finals.

Yilmaz has been praised by Virgil van Dijk and could be available for around £25m. That’s a good price for a player who has been compared to Man City star Phil Foden.

“One day he will definitely play in the Premier League because the physics come into play there,” Yilmaz’s former manager Ilker Puean said. “He has also improved his positional awareness. The level he is at now is close to Phil Foden.”
