EFL Cup: Newcastle United v AFC Wimbledon – radio commentary, live text and score updates

The tie was due to take place at Wimbledon’s Plow Lane venue last week before floods caused damage to the pitch.

Instead, it was hastily rearranged at St James’ Park, with Saudi-backed Newcastle donating £15,000 to Wimbledon to aid the substantial repair effort.

‘Thank you, NUFC and the whole football family,’ read a banner held up on the away side by Wimbledon fans.

However, the Newcastle charity were unconcerned with matters on the pitch as they clinically closed out the tie against a team 60 places below them in the football pyramid.

Howe made eight changes from the team that held Manchester City 1-1 at the weekend, but Wimbledon were comfortably second best behind the second best Magpies.

The Dons were organized, disciplined and showed plenty of fighting spirit, but posed almost no threat in the final third.

Once Newcastle got their nose in front there was no way back into contention for Johnnie Jackson’s side.
