Joe Allen: Swansea City midfielder ready to return to Wales

Pembrokeshire-born Allen was a highly influential figure for Wales before retiring, winning 74 caps and earning a place in the UEFA squad for the Euro 2016 tournament when Wales reached the semi-finals.

He said in the build-up to Euro 2024 – which Wales ended up losing after a play-off defeat to Poland – that he would “never say no” to Rob Page if Bellamy’s predecessor asked him to come out of international retirement.

Former Welsh midfielder Owain Tudur Jones said last week it was a “no brainer” to call up Allen, while former Welsh striker Sam Vokes also welcomed the idea.

Swansea manager Luke Williams said last week that Allen was “excited” at the prospect of a return to Wales.

Wales resume their Nations League campaign in Iceland on 11 October before hosting Montenegro three days later.

The Bellamy era began promisingly last month with a goalless draw at home to Turkey followed by a 2-1 win in Montenegro.
