Brighton Marine wins ruling against Steward over military health plan contract

The judge in the Steward Health Care bankruptcy case upheld the right of veteran services organization Brighton Marine Inc. to remove Steward as administrator of a health plan that covers 15,000 current and former military service members and their families.

Judge Christopher Lopez’s oral ruling during a hearing “affirms our position as advocates for our beneficiaries, who can be assured that Brighton Marine will continue to work proactively on their behalf to ensure the quality and long-term sustainability of the US Family Health,” a spokesperson for the Boston nonprofit said in an email.

Brighton Marine filed a lawsuit in May, alleging that Steward was interfering in its efforts to remove the hospital company as the health plan’s main subcontractor. Brighton Marine said it decided to fire Steward due to concerns that he was no longer financially capable of managing the health plan sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Lopez told Steward and BMI to get back to him later this month with details on how the transition to another service provider would occur.

A spokesperson for Steward did not immediately return an email seeking comment.
