Paulo Bernardo’s brilliant response after being told ‘you only score big goals’ for Celtic

Paulo Bernardo was brought back into Celtic’s starting XI for the victory over St Johnstone on Saturday night.

The 22-year-old started in Celtic’s League Cup victory over Falkirk and played 90 minutes, but Brendan Rodgers made a lot of changes for that game.

Bernardo rewarded his manager by scoring another brilliant goal in Perth and proved the depth of squad Celtic have at their disposal, this time with Reo Hatate on the bench.

When Bernardo moved to Parkhead on a season-long loan last summer, he had Hatate, Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley ahead of him in the pecking order.

Then, in the winter and especially when Hatate was injured, Bernardo got his chance, scored some goals, including against Rangers, and started to show the fans what he was capable of.

Unfortunately for him, he had so many quality players ahead of him that he remained as a substitute, but that didn’t stop him from showing his quality.

Even the Portuguese star’s brilliant shot against Falkirk was yet another example of how he once again showed his technical quality.

And when he added another high-profile goal to his list at the weekend, you can imagine he was asked about it in his post-match interview.

Bernardo brilliantly told a reporter that he might need to start scoring simple goals now, as he told The Celtic Way.

“You only score goals, you don’t make shots, right?”, says a reporter to Bernardo.

Bernardo responded by saying: “I have to book tap-ins too. Thanks.”

Will Paulo Bernardo start against Borussia Dortmund?

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Bernardo returned to the bench for the Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund, with Hatate’s addition ultimately making sense as he is fresh.

McGregor is not going to be released and club signing Arne Engels looks as good as anyone.

But whatever happens, this Celtic team is ahead in the game against Borussia Dortmund and the atmosphere is as good as it has been for a long time.
