Johnnie Walker to test new paper whiskey bottle in Edinburgh bar

Johnnie Walker has announced a new trial of paper whiskey bottles at its Edinburgh bar.

Created in partnership with PA Consulting, the design marks the first test of Diageo’s 70cl paper bottle in local stores.

The test begins on Saturday and will evaluate how bartenders interact and serve the bottle, and how the bottle behaves in a bar environment.

A total of 250 paper bottles will be used and the test is expected to take place by mid-October.

The public will be able to see the bottles in use behind the bar, but will not be able to purchase one for themselves.

This will be Diageo and PA’s second paper bottle trial, following the success of the Baileys mini paper bottle at the Time Out Festival.

The bottle design maintains the iconic square shape of the Johnnie Walker Black Label and is made from 90% paper with a plastic lining.

Jennifer English, global brand director for Johnnie Walker, said: “We are constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation, not only to deliver the premium quality and iconic design that our customers expect from us, but also to do so in a way that reflects our sustainability ambitions.

“The Johnnie Walker Black Label paper bottle trial marks a significant step forward in our journey. This trial allows us to explore new packaging in the high-intensity on-trade environment.”
